Winter inversions and summer smoke
A typical Utah winter has five or six multi-day inversions (Utah DEQ), and most summers bring some wildfire smoke. The windows stay shut and the system moves the same indoor air around for weeks. Duct cleaning won't fix the outside air. For smoky days the EPA suggests a MERV 13 or better filter if your system can take one (EPA).
